ACWA Recognizes Lawmakers for Efforts on 2009 Legislative Water Package

SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwire - December 3, 2009) - The Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA) today recognized 10 state lawmakers for their role in enacting historic water legislation this year.

The statewide association's Board of Directors adopted resolutions of appreciation for the legislators on Nov. 21. Legislators recognized include state Sens. Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento), Dennis Hollingsworth (R-Murrieta), Dave Cogdill (R-Modesto) and Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto) and Assembly Members Karen Bass (D-Los Angeles), Sam Blakeslee (R-San Luis Obispo), Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael), Jean Fuller (R-Bakersfield), Anna Caballero (D-Salinas), and Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles).

"The historic comprehensive water package that passed this fall after years of negotiation and debate was due to the collaborative work of many members of the state Legislature," ACWA President Glen Peterson said. "To acknowledge their collective contributions, ACWA wanted to recognize 10 legislators for playing a huge part in advancing the discussion of California water and for going above and beyond to win passage of a comprehensive package this year."

The package includes policy bills on the Delta, water conservation, groundwater monitoring and water rights enforcement. It also includes a comprehensive water bond measure for the November 2010 ballot that, if approved by voters, would provide $11.14 billion in funding for investments in the state's water infrastructure, ecosystem restoration and programs to improve water supply reliability.

ACWA is a statewide association of public agencies whose 450 members are responsible for about 90% of the water delivered in California. For more information, visit www.acwa.com.
