AFN: Wake up Canada!

IQALUIT, NUNAVUT--(Marketwire - Nov. 26, 2008) - On Friday, November 14, 2008, Eva Aariak became Premier of Nunavut. Only female MLA elected in the Nunavut Legislative Assembly on October 27, this discreet and unassuming Inuk was selected by her peers to become, nine years after the creation of the Territory, the second Premier of Nunavut. Unfortunately, except for the local media, this event went almost unnoticed.

Come on Canada: Nunavut is much much more than suicide statistics, oil and gas, or polar bears and shrinking sea ice. Created in 1999, further to signature by the Inuit People of the most comprehensive land claim agreement in the history of Canada, Nunavut is the youngest jurisdiction in our country. Nunavut encompasses one fifth of the total Canadian land mass. Nunavut has the youngest population in Canada; 85% of this population is Inuit. We, Nunavummiut, are living proof to the world that Canadians have lived and are still living in the Arctic Archipelago. Nunavut is history in the making!

Thanks to former Premier, Paul Okalik, the last Assembly has adopted three very important pieces of legislation: the Official Languages Act, the Inuit Language Protection Act and a new, made in Nunavut, Education Act. Implemention of these acts will shape the future of Nunavut into a modern and inclusive society. A society unique in Canada: a society where Inuit traditional language, culture and heritage will flourish into the 21st century and be passed on to future generations.

The Francophone community in Nunavut is proud to be part of this exciting endeavour. As Benoit Heneault, president of the Association des francophones du Nunavut put it: "Our organisation is looking forward to work with Premier Aariak and her new Cabinet. We want to contribute, to the best of our abilities, to the coming about of the new Nunavut society."

Since 1999, the Association des francophones du Nunavut is the official representative of the Nunavut Francophone community.
