AT&T Among First to Deploy New Nortel All-IP Product Line for GSM and UMTS Networks

Nortel's Product Line Enables Evolution to an All-IP Network

DALLAS, TEXAS--(Marketwire - Oct. 1, 2007) - Nortel announced today that AT&T will be among the first to deploy selected elements of a new All-IP product line from Nortel(1) (TSX:NT)(NYSE:NT) for GSM and UMTS wireless networks. The new product line, also announced today, is designed to help service providers easily evolve to an all-IP network which helps streamline business operations and decrease operating costs.

Nortel's launch of its new All-IP product line simplifies and consolidates service provider networks to decrease operation costs through easier maintenance and management of networks. The move to an all-IP network supports the explosion in demand for new communication services being driven by Hyperconnectivity, a global trend where anything that can be connected to the network will be connected. All-IP networks allow service providers to carry a variety of services and traffic such as voice and signaling all over a single IP network.

"One of the challenges facing major service providers is the need to meet customer demand for new services without increasing network complexity," said Graham Richardson, vice president GSM, Nortel. "To achieve this objective, Nortel has designed a highly scalable All-IP product line enabling service providers to easily evolve to next-generation networks that can support huge increases in demand for services on a simplified infrastructure. These new All-IP products bring Nortel's global leadership in VoIP to the wireless world and deliver on its wireless vision of convergence to IP."

"AT&T has built a best-in-class network and Nortel is a key partner, providing networking products that deliver the performance and reliability AT&T demands," Richardson said. "Collaborating closely with major service providers like AT&T ensures that customer demand for the latest and most innovative products and services can be met while providing service providers with a flexible foundation for future evolution."

Nortel's product launch includes a new MSC Server which uses commercial-off-the-shelf ATCA technology enabling operators to support multiple applications on the same type of platform. The new product line also includes high-density VoIP Media Gateways capable of supporting more subscribers with less equipment than traditional platforms at a significantly lower cost for the operator.

The deployment of Nortel's new product line is compliant to R4 standards, which is a release of the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP)(2), and these products can reduce operator costs by enabling more efficient use of transmission capacity and reducing the amount of network equipment required to support wireless services.

Nortel has successfully deployed R4-compliant network equipment for both GSM and UMTS core network applications since 2005. The new products not only demonstrate Nortel's commitment to GSM and UMTS service providers, they provide the foundation for evolving to 4G networks.
