Aberdeen Releases New Research Into Mainframe Technology: Complexity, Sustainability, and Talent

Research Finds That Mainframes Are a Cost- and Power-Efficient Option for IT Growth

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - May 5, 2010) -  Mainframes -- complex, power-hungry, hard to support? Or lean, powerful, and invaluable to the modern IT infrastructure? Aberdeen's research into mainframe strategy, now available through its Mainframe Technology Toolkit, suggests the latter: mainframe users can decrease cost and improve processing power by supporting critical enterprise applications on the mainframe.

The Aberdeen Mainframe Technology Toolkit, announced today by Aberdeen Group, a Harte-Hanks Company (NYSE: HHS), features research based on Aberdeen's survey of the mainframe strategy of over 150 companies.

Top performing mainframe users have reduced their costs and improved data center performance while becoming more power-efficient. Anxieties about the mainframe are ill-founded: advances in hardware and in information science have breathed new life into a workhorse platform.

Aberdeen's research found:

  • Companies that disagree with the statement "mainframes are complex" have increased the performance of their data center by 70% in the last 12 months, nearly twice as much as companies that feel mainframes are complex, and improved user satisfaction by 38%, more than double the improvement in user satisfaction for the second group.
  • Top performing mainframe users saw the power consumption of their data center increase at only 1/5th the rate of their competitors for a comparable increase in processing power, demonstrating the efficiency of a well-managed mainframe.

"The world of mainframe computing is plagued by out-of-date perceptions and fables, among which the most pervasive is the fable of the mainframe's complexity as a computing platform," says Max Gladstone, Research Associate and author of the study. "While this spinning-plates reputation may have once been deserved, the modern mainframe is a stable, efficient system. Companies that buy into outdated hype about its complexity fail to realize the potential performance gains associated with mainframe use."

The Aberdeen Group Mainframe Technology Toolkit is made available due in part to the support of Novell.
