Adbusters Media Foundation: Millions Dream of a Green Christmas

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Dec. 17, 2007) - RECLAIMING THE SEASON: This year, millions of people are taking a different approach to Christmas. They're fed up with crowded malls, the commercialization of the season, and the emphasis on consumption rather than environmental responsibility.

Interest in an alternative Christmas has been building around the globe as a sea change in people's attitude has begun to take place. Consumers want gifts that are green, ethical, fair-trade, and preferably local. Some are giving up on gifts altogether, and opting for an emphasis on spending quality time with family.

Adbusters' Buy Nothing Christmas campaign is about encouraging people to take back Christmas. Inspired by the international success of Buy Nothing Day, writers, journalists and activists began to promote a radical new approach to Christmas in the late nineties. Since then, individuals, community groups, churches, and schools in at least a dozen countries have adopted the idea.

"It's about recognizing the link between crazy consumption over the holidays and a host of serious problems," said Kalle Lasn, editor-in-chief of Adbusters magazine. "Christmas has been warped beyond recognition by commercial forces. It's time to take it back."

Some activists are running around shopping centers with signs that read, "Buy More Stuff"...Others are donning Jesus masks and performing a slow walk through the malls. Others are meditating in costume as Zen Santas. Still others are putting up posters and handing out soothing cups of tea to beleaguered shoppers.

This year the message is getting out: Christmas shouldn't be the most wasteful, stressful time of the year.
