Adopt a Shelter Dog This Month Asks The Humane Society of Canada

Attention: Assignment Editor, News Editor VANCOUVER, BC--(Marketwire - Oct. 3, 2007) - October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and The Humane Society of Canada (HSC) is asking people help these homeless animals first before looking to a breeder or a pet shop for their next special family member.

"Humane societies, SPCAs, animal shelters and rescue groups in every community across Canada have wonderful dogs looking for a permanent loving home. And if you are willing to put in the time, love, energy, patience and money, your next special family member is there waiting for you," says Al Hickey, HSC Western Regional Director. Many of these animals have been screened to help ensure that their temperaments are suitable for those adopting them and many have been vaccinated, and spayed or neutered as well."

"Each year, in Canada, over 400,000 healthy dogs and cats are killed because there simply aren't enough homes. This is the greatest preventable cruelty inflicted on pets, and we need to do everything in our power to stop it now," according to Michael O'Sullivan, HSC Executive Director, whose family shares their home with rescue dogs and cats.

One of their rescue dogs includes Sionnaich (which means 'fox' in Irish Gaelic), a three-legged mixed breed dog who suffered terribly before being adopted. "Eleven years ago, we rescued Sionnaich and each day we marvel at his kindness of spirit and his courage," says O'Sullivan.

O'Sullivan also wants people to know that they can also look for their new "best friend" online at The HSC Adoptable Pets Page.

"We created this service not only to help people who have to re-home their pets, but also to showcase the many wonderful animal companions who, through no fault of their own, find themselves in need of a home," says O'Sullivan.

Those who aren't looking to adopt a dog in the near future can help out by donating to organizations that help dogs. They can also donate their time to the animals in shelters and pounds and help them by exercising and socializing them.

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and a good time to do what we can to help dogs, everyone's best friend.
