Agiltron Awarded Navy Contract for High Reliability Mechanical Fiber Optic Splice Kit

Company Achieves Successful Transition to SBIR Phase III

WOBURN, MA--(Marketwire - December 15, 2009) - Agiltron, Inc., a leading developer and manufacturer of innovative optical components and systems, today announced that the company has been awarded a contract from the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) for a high reliability mechanical fiber optic splice kit that can be used by flight line technicians to repair and maintain mission critical aircraft. This award is the formal transition of a four year Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) program to Phase III production readiness -- a critical milestone for an SBIR program.

"The Phase III contract allows us to transition our technology to product production," said Geoffrey Burnham, Agiltron VP of Government Business. "Our engineering team worked closely with the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) to implement a solution that achieved their goal of providing a long sought mechanical fiber optic splice for battlespace maintenance of Navy aircraft." The kit provides ruggedized fiber splices that meet the low optical loss and operational reliability requirements of military/aerospace optical fiber network environments.

The product quickly and permanently repairs a fiber optic link, broken due to battle damage or wear, to nearly its original performance. All current fixed wing military aircraft, ground vehicles and command and control centers can benefit. Already at TRL6, the splice has passed extensive military and aerospace environmental testing and verification of its extreme operating temperature range. Working closely with the NAWCAD acquisition team at Patuxent River, MD, Agiltron plans to have this critical technology available to the warfighter within the next 12 months.
