Alberta Council of Women's Shelter to Host World's First Global Conference

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Sept. 4, 2008) - Delegates from over 50 countries will gather in Edmonton on Monday to take part in the world's first conference on shelter workers. Jan Reimer heads the Alberta Council of Women's Shelter:

"Well we're very excited. We have more than 750 shelter workers heading to Edmonton for the first ever global conference of shelter workers. So this is really the first time in history that shelter workers will be able to meet in one place, to really network, to support one another and to call for an end to the global epidemic of violence against women."

Reimer says Alberta leads all provinces when it comes to reports on domestic violence, including murder-suicide and stalking. As a result the women's shelter system has become absolutely strained:

Reimer clip:

"It's not rocket science. If women are forced to leave their homes where are they going to go? If they've been abused and they've been traumatized it's very difficult to find housing."

James Clancy, the president of NUPGE, the National Union of Public & General Employees, says the Alberta government has all but forgotten the plight of homeless women in the province and is urging politicians to end the crisis.

James Clancy clip:

"The situation in Alberta is particularly worrisome. Over 25,000 women and children in Alberta were turned away from overcrowded shelters last year. And that number is actually increasing. When that happens they end up on the street. The lack of shelters and affordable housing is really a form of institutional abuse."

A new secretariat was promised by the Alberta government last fall but the emphasis remains on housing for men, and abused women fear these shelters.
