The Alouettes: Grey Cup Back in Montreal-CFL championship game to be held in Montreal in 2008

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - May 12, 2006) - The Canadian Football League, in conjunction with the Montreal Alouettes, announced today that the 96th Grey Cup championship game will be held at Montreal's Olympic Stadium in November 2008.

"I am delighted to announce today the return of our championship game to Montreal," said Commissioner Tom Wright. "This city and this province have played a particularly important role in powering the renaissance that our game has enjoyed right across the country. In many ways, it was the 2001 Grey Cup, the last held in Montreal, that started a new and bold chapter for Canada's national celebration of football",

The Alouettes President and CEO Larry Smith is confident the team will organize a great event that will attract tourism and will have a great impact on the economy of Montreal.

"We are planning quite the week of festivities to celebrate the game of football. This sport has grown over the last decade, especially in the province of Quebec, and we are proud to be involved," said Mr. Smith. "With the visibility this will give the sport and the positive economic impact it will have, I am confident Grey Cup 2008 will be a huge success across the board. We are aiming for no less than to set the all-time Grey Cup attendance record in 2008."

Grey Cup Village

In 2001, the Montreal organizing committee created the innovative 'Grey Cup Village' in the heart of the city. This concept has been recreated at Grey Cup games across the country since then, and will be back in Montreal in 2008.

The Alouettes organization will head up the Grey Cup 2008 project. Over the next few months, the organizing committee will be announced, as will the event plans, and details of what will be a great celebration of Canadian football.
