AltaLink Enables Green Power

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - July 30, 2009) -

AltaLink manages Alberta's largest electricity transmission system serving 85 per cent of the province's population. Alberta's demand for greener electricity is growing which has created a backlog of much needed transmission infrastructure. AltaLink is working to meet that demand with numerous projects including two in Southern Alberta designed to help green Alberta's future. AltaLink's 240 kV Southwest project has now received Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) approval and when complete will be the first stage of new projects to help bring wind power to consumers. In June, AltaLink also launched a series of open houses and individual landowner consultations on the comprehensive South Alberta Transmission Reinforcement. Together these projects will help interconnect some 2700 MW of green wind power for Albertans.

"We have a lot of work to do to meet Alberta's electricity needs," said Scott Thon, AltaLink's President and Chief Executive Officer. "People want us to deliver green power, protect the environment and keep their electricity bills affordable. But most of all, people want us to meet their needs for electricity."

"AltaLink's projects will reinforce our transmission grid and enable customers' access to renewable sources of electricity to power their homes," says Thon. "Landowner consultation is critical to these projects. Our Southwest Alberta 240 kV project that is currently under construction required hundreds of landowner discussions and has resulted in some very creative agreements; particularly with two First Nations bands in Southern Alberta."

AltaLink, L.P. today reported its financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2009. The Partnership recorded net income of $13.0 million before tax for the quarter, compared to net income of $9.6 million before tax for the same period in 2008, primarily due to gains on disposals of assets and higher investment in transmission assets. The net income reported above is pre-tax, and is not directly comparable with net income reported by companies that recognize tax expense in their financial statements.

Total revenue of $61.4 million increased by $2.9 million in the second quarter of 2009 compared to the same quarter in 2008. Transmission tariffs approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission increased by $2.1 million on an interim tariff increase of three per cent. Our 2009 tariff will not be finalized until the Alberta Utilities Commission renders its decisions on our General Tariff Application and the Generic Cost of Capital late in 2009.
