AltaLink and TransAlta Clear Up Alberta's Electricity Debate

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Oct. 8, 2009) - Through the questions of the Business News Network's Brett Harris, an important piece of the electricity debate in Alberta was provided by two key players in the province's electrical industry, AltaLink and TransAlta.

Scott Thon, President and CEO of AltaLink, and Stephen Snyder, President and CEO of TransAlta, visited the Calgary Chamber of Commerce on Thursday afternoon to give insight into the issues around transmission development in Alberta.

From the need to invest in transmission infrastructure in the province, local generation, costs, environmental and community benefits and renewable sources of power, Thon and Snyder offered their perspective on these pressing issues.

"There has been a lot of attention over the past few months around the need for significant transmission investment in the province and it's important that Albertans have accurate information as electricity is an issue that affects all of us today and definitely in the future," says Mr. Thon. "We support local generation and renewable sources of power but transmission is key to ensuring Albertans have access to all of these diverse sources of generation. AltaLink is committed to ensuring Albertans have safe, reliable and cost-effective electricity."

"We need transmission now – not just to enable the future but to ensure we all have reliable power and allow Albertans access to the greenest and cheapest power," says Mr. Thon.

AltaLink, Canada's only fully independent transmission provider, is responsible for the maintenance and operation of more than 11,800 kilometres of transmission lines and approximately 270 substations in Alberta. As Alberta's largest supplier of safe and reliable transmission, AltaLink is moving forward to provide a transmission system that will continue to meet the growing needs of Albertans. AltaLink has been a proud supporter of Alberta 4-H since 2003, and as a Legacy Builder it is the title sponsor of all regional, district and provincial communications and public speaking programs.
