Ambulance Paramedics of BC/Media Advisory: 'Team Canada' More Than Hockey

RICHMOND, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - May 12, 2005) - Four British Columbia Ambulance Service (BCAS) paramedics will host local media to discuss their upcoming trip to Jesenik, Czech Republic. The four paramedics will be participating in this year's "Rallye Rejviz" International Integrated Rescue Medical Competition, May 26th-May 29th, 2005.

The media briefing will be held at the Vancouver International Airport, Level 3 Departures, Haida Gwaii Saturday May 16th, 2005 at 10:30 am.

As Canada's sole emergency medical service (EMS) team, Team Canada is represented by three Advanced Life Support (ALS) paramedics, Andy Fletcher, John Richmond, and Rene Bernklau. ALS paramedic and last year participant Clarke McGuire will accompany the team and will represent Canada as a Chief Judge and member of the medical competition advisory board. Lumir Popek who will act as translator, team liason and coordinator will also join the team. The BC paramedics bring with them years of pre-hospital experience as well as specialty skills in critical care air and ground transport, Chemical Biological Radioactive and Nuclear (CBRN) medical response, incident command, emergency planning, as well as paramedic training and skills development.

The Advanced Life Support paramedics (ALS) will test their theoretical and practical life saving skills during the four-day conference and competition. Team Canada will compete against teams from Japan, Europe and the United States during intensive drills and a disaster scenario. The conference will also provide the opportunity for teams to compare best practices and share quality improvement tools and techniques.
