American Banker to Honor UCBH Holdings Inc. Chairman Thomas Wu With Community Banker of the Year Award

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - October 30, 2007) - The editors of American Banker will present Thomas Wu, chairman of UCBH Holdings Inc., with its 2007 Community Banker of the Year Award at the Banker of the Year Awards gala dinner on November 29 at the Pierre Hotel in New York City.

Mr. Wu, based in San Francisco, was selected because of his success as a builder of community banking companies. UCBH Holdings Inc., with $11 billion in assets, is the holding company for United Commercial Bank (UCB), a leading commercial bank in the United States serving the Chinese communities and American companies doing business in Greater China.

"Mr. Wu's bold leadership at UCB has proven that small banks really can execute large ambitions," said David Longobardi, editor in chief of American Banker. "It is a top performing community bank that has graduated to the next level in very big way -- while at the same time taking a leadership role in the global economy."

Over the past 10 years, UCB has grown from a small thrift into a contender for the title of largest U.S. bank targeting Chinese-Americans. The bank has 51 California branches in the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, Stockton, Los Angeles and Orange counties, eight branches in New York, five branches in metropolitan Atlanta, three branches in New England, two branches in the Pacific Northwest, a branch in Houston, a branch in Hong Kong and representative offices in Shanghai and Shenzhen, China and Taipei, Taiwan.

UCBH reported record net income up 20.5 percent from the same period a year earlier and up 30 percent from the third quarter of 2004.

Wu's award will be among six bestowed on industry leaders at this year's Banker of The Year Awards gala. The others include the Community Banker of the Year Awards for Advocate and Performer, Banker of the Year Award, Innovator Award and Lifetime Achievement Awards.

Award honorees are selected by the editors of American Banker in an independent and journalistic process.

Since the inaugural Banker of the Year Awards dinner and ceremony in 2001, the gala has become the industry's premier event, attracting a "who's who" of lawmakers, regulators and leading executives.

To accompany the awards gala, a special report, "Best in Banking 2007," showcasing the year's most important stories and trends, will be published in the November 29 edition of American Banker.
