Anoto Digital Pen and Paper Technology Helps Reduce Presence of Pressure Ulcers in Patients by 30%

Digital Pen Systems' Use of Anoto's Digital Pen Provides Data Faster and More Effectively to Help Detect High Risk Patients for Ulcers

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - December 18, 2007) - Anoto Group (STKM: ANOT), the inventor of the Anoto Digital Pen and Paper technology, announces that its powerful digital pen and paper solution is successfully streamlining patient data collection processes, resulting in the reduction of pressure ulcer occurrences in addition to alleviating this condition over time.

Country Villa Health Services, which operates 50 US healthcare centers and 20 hospital-based skilled nursing units and also consults to over 20 hospitals nationwide, adopted the Anoto Digital Pen and Paper technology after the successful results of its "On-Time Pressure Ulcer Prevention" program which utilized digital pen and paper technology. This program was financed by the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) in collaboration with the Institute for Clinical Outcomes Research (ICOR), Health Management Strategies (HMS), and California Health Care Foundation (CHCF). Country Villa Health Services worked with Anoto's partner, Digital Pen Systems, to customize and deploy the digital pen and paper solution within four (4) of its nursing homes in order to track the technology's success rate in decreasing the development of pressure ulcer in patients.

"We can see trends and look for risks of developing a pressure ulcer much easier than we can with traditional paper. We can get immediate feedback and act quickly," stated Alan Gibson, Director, CQI and Customer Service, Country Villa Health Services. "The nurses are more invested in documentation now because it's easier to give immediate, daily feedback on resident care."

Anoto Digital Pen and Paper, as deployed by Digital Pen Systems, proved effective in quickly and easily converting standardized CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) daily flow sheets and resident care documentation to a digital format that is analyzed and shared with all medical care staff including doctors, dieticians, nurses, resident care practitioners and even patient family members. By providing more reliable data that could be collected faster and more efficiently with a user-friendly pen and paper system, the medical staff could more easily detect those patients with an increased risk of pressure ulcers more effectively. Over time this has resulted in a 30% decrease in the presence of pressure ulcers in their patients. The solution also helped provide the data needed to give a clearer assessment on the care to be given as well as any needed adjustments in patient care over time. Dieticians can also easier detect the possibility of a patient's condition deteriorating and could more effectively address the necessary steps over time to alleviate the condition. Moreover, relatives have been able to follow how the care of their loved ones is progressing.

Digital Pen & Paper technology

The Digital Pen & Paper (DPP) solution has been developed by Forms Management Systems (FMS), based on Anoto's technology. It is integrated with the NeoScope information transfer software from EpiConcept. The digital pen looks and feels like a normal ballpoint pen. It contains an integrated digital camera and uses a USB or Bluetooth connection for fixed or wireless transfer. The digital camera enables users to capture, store and securely transfer data, using special dotted paper. Almost invisible to the naked eye, the Anoto pattern on the paper consists of numerous intelligent black dots that can be read by the digital pen. The pattern indicates the digital pen's exact position. Moreover, the pattern on each paper sheet is unique, enabling the sheets to be separated from one another.
