Ante Up For Africa Announces $100,000 in Grants to the Eastern Congo Initiative and Water.org

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - May 3, 2010) -  Ante Up For Africa today announced two grants of $50,000 each to support the Eastern Congo Initiative and Water.org, organizations focused on supporting local, community-based solutions to some of Africa's greatest challenges.

Ante Up For Africa supports organizations that make a tangible impact on the ground in Africa through humanitarian assistance and policy work to seek lasting solutions to Africa's worst conflicts. "Ante Up For Africa is committed to raising money and awareness for Africans in need," said Don Cheadle, one of Ante Up For Africa's founders. "We are so pleased to be able to support Ben Affleck's Eastern Congo Initiative and Matt Damon's Water.org. We are confident these investments will lead to stronger, more stable communities in eastern Congo and throughout Africa."

The Eastern Congo Initiative, founded by Ben Affleck, is the first U.S. based advocacy and grant-making initiative wholly focused on working with and for the people of eastern Congo. "I am so pleased that Ante Up For Africa is partnering with the Eastern Congo Initiative and the people of eastern Congo to create new opportunities and develop a robust civil society in the region," Affleck said. "This contribution is one example of the strong coalition of advocates we are developing to increase investment and awareness about the situation in eastern Congo."

Co-founded by Matt Damon and Gary White, Water.org is a nonprofit organization that has transformed hundreds of communities in Africa, South Asia, and Central America by providing access to safe water and sanitation. Water.org works with local partners to deliver innovative solutions for long-term success.

"Today, one out of every seven people lack safe drinking water and two out of every five people lack adequate sanitation," Damon said. "Ante Up For Africa's contribution to Water.org will help us continue to develop partnerships with local organizations and find solutions that are tailored to the needs of each community. By working in partnership to solve this issue, we can help save lives."
