Earlier this week The United Church of Canada announced that on Sunday, January 17, 2010, Mardi Tindal, the Moderator of The United Church of Canada, will be issuing an open letter to all Canadians regarding the issue of climate change.

The letter, titled "Where Is the Hope after Copenhagen?" arises from the Moderator's recent travel to Denmark to attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen.

Tindal will first read her letter during the worship service at Sydenham Street United Church in Brantford, Ontario, this coming Sunday.

On Sunday, as well, 10 former Moderators have offered to deliver Tindal's message in congregations where they will be worshipping-in communities that span the country from St. John's, Newfoundland, to Sechelt, British Columbia.

Tindal says she is gratified and humbled that her predecessors were willing to respond to her invitation with such enthusiasm and on very short notice.

Tindal is also delighted that the letter will be read or distributed in more than 150 United Church congregations that requested an advance copy of the text. She sees this response as confirmation that many people share her concern that climate change is "one of the most urgent moral challenges in human history."

The text of Tindal's letter will be posted on The United Church of Canada's website ( on Sunday, January 17, 2010.
