Appeal for Witnesses in Hamilton Vehicle Collision

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 1, 2010) - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is appealing for witnesses to a vehicle collision that occurred on Thursday, April 1, 2010, at the intersection of Cannon Street East and East Avenue.

On this date, at approximately 11:30 a.m., an unmarked Waterloo Regional Police Service cruiser was involved in a collision with a civilian vehicle. The 91-year-old passenger in the civilian vehicle was taken to Hamilton General Hospital, and is in stable condition. The driver of the civilian vehicle and the officer were taken to McMaster Hamilton Health Sciences. They have both since been released.

The SIU has commenced an investigation. The Lead Investigator is interested in speaking with any member of the public who may have witnessed this incident. Anyone with information is asked to call the SIU at 1-800-787-8529 or the Lead Investigator at 416-622-1957. 

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
