Appleby College Students Target $5,000 Donation to Support Haiti Relief Efforts

OAKVILLE, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 3, 2010) - Appleby College students were so struck by the devastation in Haiti that they have planned a "Help Haiti" week at the school from Monday, Feb. 1 to Friday, Feb. 5. Through school-wide events, in-class discussions, and online donations, they hope to raise at least $5,000 for the Canadian Red Cross Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund.

"Help Haiti" T-shirts depicting illustrated faces of those who survived the catastrophe will also be on sale throughout the week at a cost of $10. Designed by Grade 12 student Carly Barrington, the T-shirt's bold design sends a strong message of hope.

"It's incredibly important to help the people of Haiti because they have lost so much and are in dire need of our support. We are fortunate enough to live in a safe place with a strong community and I feel that we must all do what we can to help them. My peers and I strongly believe that as students we have the power to come together and help these people as best we can," said Barrington.

On Wednesday, February 3 from 7 – 8 p.m. a candlelight chapel service will be held in Appleby's John Bell Chapel in honour of the earthquake victims. A prelude performance will begin at 6:45 p.m.

The week will culminate with Spirit Day, where anyone who has purchased a T-shirt can wear it over their uniforms.

Appleby is accepting online donations to the Canadian Red Cross Haiti Earthquake Fund, which can be made by visiting Appleby's website at Tax receipts from the Canadian Red Cross will be issued for donations over $5.
