Appointment of Mike Savage as HRSD Critic is Positive for Students

Attention: Education Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 18, 2007) - The Canadian Federation of Students welcomes the selection of Member of Parliament Mike Savage (Dartmouth-Cole Harbour) as the federal Liberal Caucus Critic for Human Resources Skills Development. Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion appointed Savage to the shadow cabinet post this morning.

Human Resources and Skills Development Canada oversees several programs that serve students, such as the Canada Student Loans Program, Canada Study Grants, and the student Summer Career Placement program recently cut by the Conservative government.

Since his election in 2004, Savage has worked closely with the Canadian Federation of Students in his role as Chair of the Liberal Caucus on Post Secondary Education and Research. He has addressed Federation representatives on several occasions and has spoken frequently in the House of Commons about post-secondary education.

"Mike Savage is accessible and very engaged on issues affecting students and their families", said Amanda Aziz, National Chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students. "We look forward to working with him to increase the federal government's contribution to affordable, high-quality post-secondary education".
