OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 7, 2009) - The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today announced the appointment of Brenda Stehelin as a member of the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board.

"Ms. Stehelin is very passionate about promoting and contributing to the accomplishments of the Aboriginal artistic community," said Minister Moore. "I believe that her creativity and her insight into Aboriginal art will make her a valuable asset to the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board."

Ms. Stehelin is a Yukon artist of Tlingit descent who has been the owner and operator of a prominent Yukon art gallery since 1998. As a First Nations artist and gallery owner, she has developed a great deal of experience in assessing, procuring, framing, and selling fine art, particularly art by local artists. She has also worked as a lecturer at the Klondike Institute of Visual Arts on the relationship between the gallery and the artist.

Ms. Stehelin has a Certificate of Native Communications from Grant McEwan College and a Certificate in Custom Picture Framing from the Langley School of Art Framing.

The Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board's mandate is to make determinations regarding the outstanding significance and national importance of cultural assets under the Cultural Property Export and Import Act. It is also responsible for determining the fair market value of items donated to Canadian organizations such as libraries, archives, and museums. In addition, the Board reviews appeals of applications for cultural property export permits that have been denied.
