Appointment to the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 7, 2008) - The Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women and Minister for La Francophonie, today announced the appointment of Ralph Stanton as a member of the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board.

"Mr. Stanton's knowledge of rare books and special collections will no doubt benefit the Board," said Minister Verner. "I am pleased to welcome him as a member of the Board."

Since 2002, Mr. Stanton has been the head of the Rare Books and Special Collections Division at the University of British Columbia Library. During his career, he played a key role in the acquisition of a number of outstanding book and map collections. He started his career as a reference librarian at the Vancouver Public Library and held various positions at Douglas College and at the Simon Fraser University before joining the University of British Columbia.

Mr. Stanton has been involved with the board of numerous organizations, including the Alcuin Society, the College Institute Educators' Association of British Columbia, and as Chair on the Advisory Planning Commission of the City of New Westminster. He holds a Masters in Library Science from the University of British Columbia and is a member of the Bibliographical Society of Canada.

The Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board has a mandate to determine whether a cultural property is of outstanding significance or of national importance under the terms of the Cultural Property Export and Import Act. It is also responsible for determining the fair market value of objects donated to Canadian institutions, including libraries, archives, and museums.
