Appointment to the Port Alberni Port Authority

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 15, 2009) - Canada's Transport Minister John Baird today announced the appointment of Ms. Gillian Trumper of Port Alberni, British Columbia, to the board of directors of the Port Alberni Port Authority for a term of three years.

"I am pleased that Ms. Trumper has agreed to serve on the board of the Port Alberni Port Authority," said Baird. "Her experience working with the provincial government will serve her well as she assumes her new responsibilities."

Ms. Trumper was mayor of Port Alberni from 1983 to 2001, after which she was elected as Member of the Legislative Assembly for Alberni-Qualicum in the 2001 provincial general election and served for four years. From 1990 to 1996 she was chair of the Alberni Clayoquot Economic Development Commission, and from 1996 to 1997 she served as president of the Union of British Columbia Municipalities. Ms. Trumper was named Freeman of the City of Port Alberni in 2002.

The Port Alberni Port Authority is the Canada Port Authority (CPA) established to manage the Port of Port Alberni under the Canada Marine Act. Seventeen CPAs now make up Canada's national port system. The CPAs are non-share capital corporations incorporated under the Canada Marine Act and are of strategic significance to Canada's trade. Their effective operation contributes to Canada's global competitiveness as a trading nation.
