Areas of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island Closed to Molluscan Shellfish Harvesting

DARTMOUTH, NOVA SCOTIA and MONCTON, NEW BRUNSWICK--(Marketwire - Sept. 1, 2009) - Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) advises the public that the harvesting of bivalve molluscs including oysters, clams, mussels and quahogs, except scallops, for recreational or commercial purposes, is prohibited until further notice in areas of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. Coordinates of the areas are outlined below.

This closure is a precautionary one due to extremely heavy rainfall the weekend of August 28th-30th which is likely to contaminate shellfish and increase levels of Bacterial Shellfish Poisoning. The closure was issued by DFO on the recommendation from Environment Canada and reflects our primary responsibility to protect the health of the public.

Coordinates of closure:

Nova Scotia - The foreshore and marine waters within 1.6 km of the Counties of Victoria, Cape Breton, Richmond, Guysborough, Halifax, Lunenburg, Queens, Shelburne, Yarmouth, Digby, Annapolis, Kings, Hants, Colchester, Cumberland, Pictou, Antigonish and Inverness.

New Brunswick - The foreshore and marine waters within 1.6 km of Southern New Brunswick from the Nova Scotia border along the coast of New Brunswick to the United States border and the foreshore and waters within 1.6 km of the Islands of Grand Manan, The Wolves, Bliss, Hills, Frye, Deer and Campobello.

The foreshore and marine waters of the Northumberland Strait within 1.6 km of the Southeastern New Brunswick coastline from the Nova Scotia border along the coast of New Brunswick to the wharf at St-Edouard-de-Kent.

Prince Edward Island - All foreshore and marine waters within 1.6 km of the Prince Edward Island coastline.

Testing by Environment Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency is underway on an urgent basis. The results will help to determine the next steps forward towards progressive re-openings.
