Atheros Hy-Fi Solutions Featured in Hybrid Network Products From NETGEAR

Hy-Fi Products Revolutionize the Home Networking Market by Delivering the Best of the Wired and Wireless Worlds

LAS VEGAS, NV--(Marketwire - January 5, 2011) - International CES -- Atheros Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATHR), a global leader in innovative technologies for wireless and wired communications, today announced that leading networking vendors have delivered hybrid products based on Atheros Hy-Fi™ solutions. New hybrid networking products from NETGEAR® and other manufacturers combine Atheros Wi-Fi®, HomePlug® powerline and Ethernet technologies to ensure networked devices can connect anywhere in the home.

The availability of these products marks the beginning of an industry movement toward hybrid home networks that use multiple connectivity technologies to achieve optimal performance and coverage. The combination of wired and wireless technologies not only boosts network bandwidth and coverage in every home environment, but it greatly simplifies network setup and use for consumers.

Key Facts:

  • With the increasing popularity of digital media applications and services, consumers need networking solutions that adapt to their environment and applications, instead of forcing them to adapt to the network. Atheros is the first silicon vendor to address this need by combining the most popular wired and wireless technologies, and is now working with retail networking giants to deliver the best possible networking experience to consumers.

  • Atheros Hy-Fi technology enables a variety of mix-and-match networking products, allowing consumers to easily build a home network with the performance they need, where they need it. The hybrid router acts as the hub of the digital home, distributing broadband over powerline to televisions and other non-wireless consumer electronics, and extending the wireless network to reach mobile devices in the far corners of the home.

  • NETGEAR recently debuted its new N300 Wireless Router with Powerline AV (WNXR2000) and Powerline AV 200 Wireless-N Extender (XAVN2001), which use Atheros XSPAN® 802.11n, AMP™ powerline and ETHOS® Ethernet technologies to deliver applications and IP multimedia content everywhere in the home. The high-performance hybrid router can work with a variety of NETGEAR Wi-Fi and powerline adapters to blanket the home with fast and reliable connectivity.

  • Products based on Atheros Hy-Fi technology can solve many of the home networking issues faced by many consumers -- including complicated installation, spotty coverage and inadequate bandwidth for media applications. By unifying the wired and wireless networks with a single user interface, Hy-Fi products simplify network setup, security and management for mainstream consumers.

  • Further advancing hybrid networks, the IEEE recently began work on the P1905.1 specification, which provides a common interface between powerline, Wi-Fi, Ethernet and MoCA (Multimedia over Coax) products. By facilitating communication and cooperation between wired and wireless technologies, P1905.1 will not only improve the performance of home networks, but will also make them much easier for consumers to install and use.

  • Atheros is demonstrating its Hy-Fi solutions at the 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show. Its private suite is located in the south hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center, lower level, booth 25528MP.
