August Housing Starts in New Brunswick

MONCTON NB, Sept. 9 - According to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation's (CMHC's) preliminary data(1) released today, residential construction in August produced a total of 276 starts in New Brunswick's urban centres compared to 259 units during the same period last year.

"With a year-over-year increase in multiple starts in August, total housing starts in provincial urban centres surpassed last year's total for the month," said Claude Gautreau, CMHC's senior market analyst for New Brunswick. A total of 131 multiple starts were recorded in August of this year, up 37 per cent from the 96 units recorded during the same month in 2008. Despite increased multiple starts in August, the year-to-date total after the first eight months of the year was down 10 per cent compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile, single starts in provincial urban centres were down 11 per cent to 145 units in August. Year-to-date, single starts were down 26 per cent to 799 units. "Despite a strong overall showing in August, single starts continue to trail last year's pace, a trend that will likely continue during the second half of the year," continued Gautreau.

In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts in August declined by 27 per cent, down to 12,187 units compared to last year's total of 16,807. Single-detached starts decreased 26 per cent to 5,211 units, while multiple unit starts were down 28 per cent from 9,744 units last year to 6,976 units this year. In the Atlantic region, 835 new units were started in August 2009 compared to 879 units during the same period in 2008.
