"Automate Lenexa, Kansas" Plan Advances With Selection of Accela Solutions

Web-Based Applications Support City's Goals to Improve Citizen Relations Through Automation of Services

LENEXA, KS--(Marketwire - November 7, 2007) - Lenexa, Kansas is probably not the first city that comes to mind when considering technology trendsetters, but the Midwestern city with a population of 44,000 is adding to its decades-long commitment to position itself on the leading edge of technological advances.

Under its plan to "Automate Lenexa," the city has selected Accela Automation® from Accela, Inc. to streamline its permitting, licensing, and inspections processes and increase the quality of service it provides. Planning and code enforcement staff, citizens, and the Lenexa business community will be able to utilize the more user-friendly, easily accessible system to conduct business via the Internet.

"We are proud to have been termed the 'tech-tropolis' of the area, and are excited to implement solutions which will continue to make improvements in the way we do business," said John VanNice, Lenexa IT director. "We've always been a leader in the use of technology and Web-based applications like those from Accela which can help our staff work more efficiently and provide better service to our citizens."

Lenexa already has a citywide, pre-WiMax, wireless broadband network in place, and is among the first group of jurisdictions in the area to have developed a strategic plan that includes moving from a paper-based system to an electronic one in order to facilitate community growth and development. The addition of the Accela solutions helps solidify the city's leading edge role in the region with the implementation of state-of-the-art technology for automating land use activities and connecting citizens to government services.

The city's "Automate Lenexa" initiative recognizes that technology holds the key to supporting the mission of its Planning and Development department: To develop and maintain neighborhoods that respect the environment, provide quality of life for residents and businesses, ensure consistent quality of building construction for safety and long-term value, and provide professional service to property owners and the development community.

Lenexa will utilize additional Accela applications to enhance the functionality of Accela Automation in updating and streamlining agency processes:

Accela Wireless™ mobile government application will take full advantage of Lenexa's wireless network in enabling building inspectors to perform their jobs from the field to process inspections, code enforcement, work orders, and service requests more efficiently and deliver faster results. Optimized for Centrino® Mobile Technology, Accela Wireless is compatible with PDAs, laptops, and Tablet PCs running on the Microsoft Pocket PC, Windows 2000, or Windows XP operating systems.

Accela GIS™ seamlessly integrates with Accela Automation to provide powerful real-time visual analysis to enhance land use, zoning, and infrastructure data. Lenexa will use the application as its master repository for Address/Parcel/Owner (APO) data that can be accessed and shared across the agency to increase accuracy and improve business workflow. Accela GIS allows creation of multiple map layers, automated map analysis, parcel and asset inventory management, direct editing of GIS data or files, and auto-distribution of information to mailing lists. It is built on the ArcIMS™ platform by ESRI®.

"We welcome the opportunity to support Lenexa as a new Accela client and applaud their leadership in recognizing the value of utilizing Web-based technology in connecting citizens to government services," said Maury Blackman, Accela's president and CEO. "The city's foresight today will have measurable benefits long into the future."
