Average Age of Typical Auto Lease Driver Goes Up

Lease Drivers 50+ Are Biggest Gain for During Last 5 Years

MIAMI, FL--(Marketwire - February 10, 2010) -, the nation's most popular online marketplace for car leasing, revealed interesting demographic data comparing drivers of leased vehicles today vs. last decade. The average age of a auto lease driver is now 42.4 years of age, up from 36.6 years when first started 10 years ago.

Leasing a vehicle has traditionally skewed towards a specific demographic because of lifestyle differences between certain ages. Leasing became more popular during the 1980s when dealers and manufacturers began promoting leasing as a new way to create additional consumer incentive programs. During the last five years in particular, drivers 50 and over have been's largest percentage increase for lease marketplace activity (35.6% growth), helping to drive up the average age.

"The leasing generation has permeated all kinds of areas of our lives, including cars, where people now want the ability to enjoy variety on their own terms," said Sergio Stiberman, CEO and founder of "Leasing has been embraced by car shoppers who've grown up with car leasing, along with older drivers who have warmed up to the leasing lifestyle where a person no longer holds onto a car for 10 years."

Here is a demographic age comparison broken down by region:

California 34.3 39.2 (avg. age)
