Avtec Systems Awarded TDRSS K-Band Upgrade Project by Honeywell

CHANTILLY, VA--(Marketwire - October 30, 2007) - Avtec Systems, Inc. (Avtec), a wholly owned subsidiary of CVG, Inc. (CVG), announced today that it has been awarded a contract from Honeywell Technology Solutions, Inc. to demonstrate an enhanced satellite communications receiver and modulator for NASA's Tracking Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) K-band Upgrade Project (TKUP). Under TKUP, NASA would replace existing K-band Single Access Return (KSAR) high rate equipment in TDRSS ground terminals with a solution that can extend data rates up to 1.5 Gbps and process more bandwidth-efficient signals with higher performance error correcting codes.

Avtec will demonstrate its industry-leading, next-generation High Data Rate Modem (HDRM), a tunable software-defined radio capable of supporting the broad range of modulation formats, data rates, and error correction codes required by NASA. Using existing TDRSS transmission infrastructure, HDRM will increase the KuSAR channel data rate from 300 Mbps to 625 Mbps and the KaSAR data rate from 625 Mbps to 1.5 Gbps.

HDRM is a high-rate, multi-mission, satellite-based modem and simulation system providing an integrated solution from IF to IP in a CompactPCI form factor. The modem supports Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK), Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK), Staggered Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (SQPSK), Unbalanced Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (UQPSK) and Eight Phase Shift Keying (8PSK). HDRM's FPGA-based Parallel Forward Error Correction (PFEC) module provides the high-speed reconfigurable logic and memory density required for high-performance codes such as Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) or Turbo Product Code (TPC). HDRM has built-in front-end processing, including Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) and Time-Division Multiplexing (TDM) telemetry formats, and provides real-time disk logging, file playback, and high-speed network data transfer.

"Avtec's HDRM is based on more than 25 years of real-time, wideband signal processing experience and 15 years of manufacturing high-rate front-end processing systems," said Stephen Gizinski, CVG's President and Chief Executive Officer. "We are pleased to work with Honeywell to demonstrate our technologically advanced solution on this important NASA project."
