BNSF Honors Burlington Junction Railway for Partnership Excellence

FORT WORTH, TX--(Marketwire - November 17, 2009) - BNSF Railway Company (BNSF) has recognized the Burlington Junction Railway (BJRY), headquartered in Burlington, Iowa, with a BNSF Shortline Achievement Award. The award was presented to BJRY President Steve Hoth at BNSF's 14th Annual Shortline Conference on Oct. 19, 2009 in Fort Worth, Texas.

"Burlington Junction Railway goes above and beyond in finding new business opportunities, whether along their lines or accessible through rail-truck transloads, understanding what the customer's total transportation needs are, and developing a service to meet their customers' expectations," said Pete Rickershauser, BNSF vice president, Network Development.

BJRY started as a single rail operation in 1985. The railway now operates in six locations, including Burlington, Mt. Pleasant, and Ottumwa, Iowa; Quincy, Rochelle, and Montgomery, Ill. BJRY handles many different commodities such as foodstuffs, lumber, grain, chemicals and fertilizers. The railway has a 24-year streak of no lost-time injuries among their employees.

BNSF Shortline Achievement Awards were also presented to the Yellowstone Valley Railroad and the Plainsman Switching Company.

"These shortline railroads symbolize the kind of relationship that exists between BNSF and our shortlines, working to the ultimate benefit of all our customers," said Rickershauser. "These awards are designed to honor the shortlines that have exceeded expectations, not only in building new business, but also providing customer focus, resourcefulness, operational flexibilities and a local presence in their communities."

Operating on about 19,000 miles of track across the United States, nearly 200 BNSF shortline partners keep hundreds of communities and businesses connected to its mainline.

A subsidiary of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation (NYSE: BNI), BNSF Railway operates one of the largest railroad networks in North America, with about 32,000 route miles in 28 states and two Canadian provinces. The railway is among the world's top transporters of intermodal traffic, moves more grain than any other American railroad, transports the components of many of the products we depend on daily, and hauls enough low-sulfur coal to generate about ten percent of the electricity produced in the United States.
