BNSF Honors Yellowstone Valley Railroad for Partnership Excellence

FORT WORTH, TX--(Marketwire - November 17, 2009) - BNSF has recognized the Yellowstone Valley Railroad (YSVR), located in Eastern Montana, with a BNSF Shortline Achievement Award. The award was presented to John Brown, Watco Companies chief operating officer, West Region, at BNSF's 14th Annual Shortline Conference on Oct. 19, 2009 in Fort Worth, Texas.

"The cornerstone of Yellowstone Valley Railroad's success is their flexibility to adapt to new business opportunities and conditions," said Pete Rickershauser, BNSF vice president, Network Development. "This shortline always maintains high-service expectations for its directly-served customers linking with the BNSF network in the midst of rerouting trains due to maintenance of way windows and weather-related traffic changes."

YSVR began operations in August 2005 and is an affiliate of Watco companies. The railroad operates more than 170 miles of track in Montana's Yellowstone River Valley. YSVR has been very aggressive in developing new customers in the gas, crude oil, and frac sand markets. These new endeavors combined with YSVR's long running relationships with agriculture industry customers have substantially increased the number of carloads for the railroad in the last year.

BNSF Shortline Achievement Awards were also presented to the Plainsman Switching Company and the Burlington Junction Railway.

"These shortline railroads symbolize the kind of relationship that exists between BNSF and our shortlines working to the ultimate commercial benefit of all our customers," said Rickershauser. "These awards are designed to honor the shortlines that have exceeded expectations, not only in building new business, but also providing customer focus, resourcefulness, operational flexibilities, and a local presence in their communities."

Operating on about 19,000 miles of track across the United States, nearly 200 BNSF shortline partners keep hundreds of communities and businesses connected to its mainline.

A subsidiary of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation (NYSE: BNI), BNSF Railway operates one of the largest railroad networks in North America, with about 32,000 route miles in 28 states and two Canadian provinces. The railway is among the world's top transporters of intermodal traffic, moves more grain than any other American railroad, transports the components of many of the products we depend on daily, and hauls enough low-sulfur coal to generate about ten percent of the electricity produced in the United States. BNSF Railway is an industry leader in Web-enabling a variety of customer transactions at
