BUILDER Magazine Celebrates 25 Years of Residential Design Excellence

WASHINGTON, DC -- (MARKET WIRE) -- November 2, 2005 -- Builder magazine celebrated the 25th anniversary of its prestigious Builder's Choice Design & Planning Awards in Washington at the Willard InterContinental hotel on October 6. The silver anniversary event included a design seminar featuring some of America's leading architects and the induction of the first members of the new BUILDER - Wm. S. Marvin Hall of Fame for Design Excellence.

The five inductees into the BUILDER - Wm. S. Marvin Design Hall of Fame were:

-- Barry A. Berkus, AIA, B3 Architects, a Berkus Design Studio, Santa
    Barbara, Calif.
-- Rodney F. Friedman, FAIA, Fisher Friedman Associates, Emeryville,
-- David Furman, FAIA, David Furman Architecture, Charlotte, N.C.
-- Walter Richardson, FAIA, RNM Design, Newport Beach, Calif.
-- Jefferson B. Riley, FAIA, Centerbrook Architects and Planners,
    Centerbrook, Conn.
"Along with BUILDER magazine, Marvin is proud to recognize these five visionary architects for standing out among their peers in the field of residential design. These men have collectively changed the face of residential architecture through their award-winning designs, innovative styles and building philosophies," said Susan Marvin, president of Marvin Windows and Doors.

In addition to the BUILDER - Wm. S. Marvin Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Builder presented the 2005 Builder's Choice Design and Planning Awards, which recognize excellence in residential design. Each year a panel of judges select the Builder's Choice Design and Planning Awards winners based on a set of criteria that include: innovation in architecture, efficiency in design and creative use of materials. This year's judges honored building and architecture firms with 47 awards in more than 25 different categories.

"It's not easy to win a Builder's Choice award," said Boyce Thompson, editorial director of BUILDER, the leading magazine for the residential building industry. "We want to only recognize the most outstanding work and let it serve as an inspiration."

The Builder's Choice Design and Planning Awards event was co-sponsored by Marvin Windows and Doors and Silestone by Cosentino.

This year's Project of the Year, Cannery Lofts -- designed by Tannerhecht Architecture in Newport Beach, California -- is a live/work infill project that showcases edgy design, great bone structure, a gutsy parking solution and all-around innovative design. The project complements the residential/commercial nature of its neighborhood and exceeded expectations for a Builder's Choice Project of the Year.
