Backgrounder: Mississauga Transit Funding Details

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 2, 2009) - Federal support for this project comes from the Gas Tax Fund. This fund is in place to meet federal objectives of cleaner air and water while addressing local priority projects.

As of 2010, the City of Mississauga will have received over $49 million in gas tax funding as well as $39 million in gas tax funding through the Region of Peel's allocation.

Since 2004, the Province of Ontario has provided $49 million in gas tax funding to Mississauga to improve public transit:

- Allocation of $15.9 million in provincial gas tax funds from Oct 08/Sept 09

- Provided $5.3 million by the Province through the 2008 Ontario Bus Replacement Program (OBRP) to support the purchase of 40 replacement buses.

- Allocation of $26.5 million in the 2008 Provincial Budget for transit vehicles and infrastructure to support the Dundas and Hurontario Higher-Order Transit Corridor Development project: $18.7 million to purchase 22 transit vehicles; $6 million for Dundas St. and Hurontario St. higher order transit corridor development and $1.8 million for a pedestrian overpass at the Cooksville GO Station
