Barrie Sports Medicine Physician Off to the Paralympics

BARRIE, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 11, 2010) - Sports medicine physician Dr. Shannon Bauman, of Barrie, Ontario, will be going for Triple Gold when she cares for athletes at the Paralympic games in Vancouver March 12 to the 21.

With Canada winning double gold in men's and women's hockey, Dr. Bauman is excited to see if they can make it three gold medals. Dr. Bauman, who is the physician for Sledge Hockey, will be caring for the world's top Sledge Hockey players representing eight countries in competition at the Thunderbird arena in Vancouver.

Dr. Bauman is a primary care sports medicine physician at Barrie Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Centre in Barrie, Ontario. She will be overseeing the Paralympic Sledge Hockey Trauma Room, providing on-ice acute care, and assessing and managing injuries. Dr. Bauman is affiliated with Barrie's Trainer's Choice, which is the official supplier of orthopaedic braces and supports to Hockey Canada.

"I often recommend Trainer's Choice braces to athletes for various injuries," says Dr. Bauman. "They are well made and I trust they will exceed the expectations of our hockey players in Vancouver. In sledge hockey, I particularly see strains of the elbow, shoulder and upper back."

Sledge hockey is a sport that was designed to allow participants who have a physical disability to play the game of ice hockey. Ice sledge hockey is also known as sled hockey in the United States.

Sledge hockey is the Paralympics' equivalent of ice hockey. It is played using two blade sledges, which allow the puck to pass underneath the sledge. They are propelled by sticks with a spike in one end and a blade in the other end for shooting.

The sport is played by athletes with a physical disability in the lower half of their body. There is no classification system as such, but the minimum disability ruling applies. For example, the athlete must have a permanent disability that prevents him from skating on his feet. There is no current competition for women.

"Dr. Bauman will bring a lot of knowledge to the physio team at the Paralympics. Her confidence in Trainer's Choice products speaks to the quality we bring to the table," says Rick Schaly, President of Trainer's Choice, Inc.
