Beacon Power CEO a Featured Speaker at KEMA Utility of the Future Leadership Forum 2010

Bill Capp to Offer Insight Into Balancing Mature and Emerging Energy Technologies for a Smarter, Sustainable Grid

BURLINGTON, MA--(Marketwire - May 4, 2010) -  Beacon Power President and CEO Bill Capp will be a featured speaker at KEMA's third annual Utility of the Future Leadership Forum, "Strategic Choices -- Striking Equilibrium." Capp will join energy and utility industry CEOs in sharing their insights on technologies, strategy and challenges to engage customers and achieve a sustainable energy supply at the KEMA event, being held June 23 - 25, 2010 at The Four Seasons, Washington, DC.

Capp will be speaking about advanced energy technologies as part of the forum's executive panel on balancing mature and emerging technologies to enable a sustainable intelligent infrastructure. For over a decade, Beacon Power has been focused on developing and commercializing flywheel-based energy storage solutions for grid-scale frequency regulation services and other applications. The company is now in production with its fourth-generation flywheel system, which is the basis of the grid-scale Smart Energy Matrix now being commercially deployed for the regulation of grid frequency.

"Addressing the urgent need for clean and sustainable energy solutions that operate efficiently and effectively and do not burn fossil fuel puts new challenges and pressures on the utility industry," said Capp. "With increasing penetration of various intermittent renewable energy resources, there is a growing need for grid-stabilizing frequency regulation. Technologies like Beacon flywheels have highly attractive performance characteristics, such as fast-response -- providing the capability to quickly charge and discharge power to the grid and keep it in balance. This method of regulation has an added benefit of lower CO2, SOx, and NOx emissions when compared to any of the traditional methods, such as coal, natural gas, and pumped hydro storage systems."

KEMA's annual Utility of the Future leadership series is gathering industry executives, senior financial analysts, government officials and other utility stakeholders to discuss strategic directions in balancing changing customer expectations, technologies and environmental policies and regulations. Leaders and innovators across the energy industry will take part in discussions focused on customer engagement, investment strategy, regulatory policy and the state of carbon and environmental issues, and explore strategic views of what a sustainable, intelligent infrastructure will look like.

Senior executives are invited to join their peers in the Utility of the Future discussion to share ideas and discover opportunities to shape a more sustainable, reliable and profitable utility of the future. Throughout the event, forum participants will have high-level networking opportunities to share perspectives, collaborate and engage in dialogue.
