Bechtel Announces ES&H Awards

FREDERICK, MD--(Marketwire - June 22, 2010) -  Bechtel employees who demonstrate extraordinary commitment to safety and innovation have been recognized with the company's annual Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) awards.

The Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant (PCAPP) project in Pueblo, Colorado, won the Team of the Year award for its many accomplishments in safety. In 2008, PCAPP received the U.S. Department of Labor's highest safety and health award -- Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Voluntary Protection Program "Star" status. The status recognizes the project's world-class safety program and culture. The project has since undergone a reevaluation audit and earned a two-year "Star" status extension.

Dan Bravo, who works on the Los Pelambres Repower II project in Chile, was named the ES&H Professional of the Year. Under Bravo's leadership, the copper concentrator expansion project in the Andes performed 5.6 million job hours without a lost time incident. He has won accolades from colleagues for his innovative team-oriented approach and emphasis on People-Based Safety.

"Safety is fundamental to Bechtel's culture and we strive for a zero accident work environment," said Kevin Berg, Bechtel Environment, Safety and Health Manager. "It's important to have sound processes and procedures on every jobsite, but they are only as good as the people implementing them. Bechtel's ES&H awards recipients inspire others to make Bechtel's job sites safe environments."

"Bechtel's safety performance is at the top of the industry." said Andy Greig, president of Bechtel's mining and metals business unit and keynote speaker at the annual Bechtel ES&H conference. "We make it personal, we engage our people, and we keep it fresh because we owe it to ourselves and each other. We live and breathe safety."

Bechtel ES&H awards recognize teams and individuals who combine innovation with proven ES&H programs to create a safe work plan. By constantly evaluating work processes and creating a culture focused on safety, Bechtel has earned an industry-leading record of achieving zero lost-time incidents on 90 percent of its projects worldwide.
