Belgium's Oscar® Contender, "The Misfortunates," to Open at L.A.'s Nuart Theater

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - December 7, 2009) - "The Misfortunates," Belgium's official entry for the Motion Picture Academy's Foreign Language Film category, will open at the Nuart Theater in West Los Angeles on December 11 for a one week run. A nationwide release is planned for February 2010. Distributed by NeoClassics Films, it is also competing for the Academy Award® as Best Picture, Dirk Impens; Best Director, Felix van Groeningen; Best Actor, Valentijn Dhaenens and Best Adapted Screenplay, Christophe Dirickx and Felix van Groeningen, based on the novel of the same name by Demitri Verhulst.

The film was in the Directors Fortnight in Cannes this year, where it received the Cinema Jury Special Mention, and at the Toronto International Film Festival. It won a rare three jury awards at the Hamptons International Film Festival -- Best Narrative Feature, Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography. It has also been selected for the Pusan International Film Festival and the Palm Springs International Film Festival. As one of the top-grossing films of the year in Belgium, "The Misfortunates" has grossed over $3.3 million on 30 screens in eight weeks playing only in the Flemish speaking region of the country.

"The Misfortunates" is a humorous tale of debauchery, pathos and growing up. The film finds hope and resurrection amidst the moral depravity and lecherous behavior that a 13-year-old's father and uncles indulge in on a daily basis. This is a Menuet & IDTV Film presentation.
