Blackboard Appoints New Senior Marketing Executives

Experienced Executives to Focus Company on International Expansion and Education Market Strategy

WASHINGTON, DC -- (MARKET WIRE) -- August 16, 2005 -- Blackboard Inc. (NASDAQ: BBBB) is pleased to announce that Juan Lucca and Gordon Freedman have joined the company's worldwide marketing group. Lucca, Vice President, International Market Development, will utilize his global enterprise software experience to help drive Blackboard's penetration in international markets. Freedman, Vice President, Education Strategy, will leverage his industry and domain expertise to expand Blackboard's presence in all global education markets.

Juan Lucca; Vice President, International Market Development

Mr. Lucca comes to Blackboard with more than 20 years of experience in international software sales and business development at a variety of global enterprise software companies. Prior to joining Blackboard, he served as Vice President of International Operations at XML-Partners Inc., currently a fully owned subsidiary of SOFTWARE AG which delivers enterprise software solutions across the world. Before his position at XML, Mr. Lucca served as the Director of Sales for Telispark, Inc. (a subsidiary of Deloitte Consulting), which sells mobile software solutions to Global 2000 companies. He also worked as the Director of International Operations at SAGA Software International, Inc, and as a database professor at a university in Venezuela. Mr. Lucca earned his Masters in Business Administration and a degree in systems engineering while studying in Caracas, Venezuela, his native country. He is bilingual in Spanish and English and lives in Virginia with his wife and family.

Gordon Freedman; Vice President, Education Strategy

Mr. Freedman joins Blackboard from his consulting company, Knowledge Base, LLC, a respected provider of expert advice for transforming education through the use of e-Learning, media, and enterprise technology. Mr. Freedman has worked extensively with Higher Education and K12 education corporations, institutions, foundations, and with the textbook industry. He has provided advice to the US Department of Education Office of Educational Technology, the American Museum of Natural History, and has been a consultant to the University of California in numerous capacities. Mr. Freedman recently served as acting CEO of TextCentric, Inc, a pioneer in digital textbook technology, led Prometheus, a course management system developed by George Washington University, to market prior to its sale to Blackboard, and was an executive with HungryMinds and Knowledge Exchange. Mr. Freedman is co-founder and board Member of the International School of Monterey, a California charter school, and is an expert on virtual education in K12, online learning in higher education, and digital textbooks. Freedman writes and speaks on the use of technology to transform education to meet the demands of the information age. Prior to his work in education, he was an executive producer of film and television in Los Angeles and a network television news producer for ABC News in Washington, DC.
