Blast Radius Intern Lands 'Crunchie' Award, Alongside Google and Facebook

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA and AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS--(Marketwire - Feb. 3, 2010) - It's an impressive coup for a 21-year old graphic designer barely out of school.

Fredrik Weinestad (aka Fred Winetown), currently interning at Blast Radius in Amsterdam, recently won a coveted Crunchie award, alongside competitors like Google and Facebook. The Crunchies are sort of like the Oscars for Internet start-ups, celebrating the biggest innovations of the year.

Weinestad won for his pet project, tinychat. TinyChat is a "dead simple" web-based chat room that is visited by 100,000 people a day. It won the category of "Best Bootstrapped StartUp."

Chris Mellish, Blast's Managing Director for EMEA, says, "We're fortunate to attract the brightest talent in the business. Not every agency can boast that its intern just won a major international award."

Weinestad, who is 2 months into his internship at Blast, was freelancing in Stockholm and juggling various chat clients such as IM, yahoo chat, Skype back in November 2008 when the idea struck. What Weinestad wanted didn't exist yet: a one-stop chat room.

"I need this thing! Why isn't there this thing?" he remembers thinking. Weinested made some sketches and pitched the idea to web developer and entrepreneur Dan Blake, in Boston, a former colleague. "One month later we had the site up and running," Weinestad says. "It started out quickly and became a huge success very fast."

TinyChat is a familiar name in the Blast Amsterdam office. "Many of the employees here have used TinyChat before," he says. When he first told his friends at Blast about his role in TinyChat they were bowled over. "That's crazy! We use it all the time," one colleague exclaimed.

Despite having forged such a successful freelance career with TinyChat under his belt, Weinestad is keen to stay at Blast after his internship ends – "If they want me," he humbly adds. "My coworkers are great bunch of highly skilled people; they give me insights I never could have dreamed of."
