Bloom Or Bust: Men Go For Floral Alternatives

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Feb. 1, 2010) - A GROWING number of men are striving for floral alternatives for their lovers on Valentine's Day.

The quest to be original has led to husbands and boyfriends seeking something other than traditional dozen red roses for February 14.

But a leading online florist says it is unlikely roses will be toppled from their throne as the traditional floral classic for lovers.

Peter Ahl, Managing Director of Serenata Flowers, said:

"We have noticed more and more men trying to steer away from traditional red roses. Big statement bouquets and pink flowers are particularly popular. I think it's a case of men just trying to be original and if their wife or girlfriend queries it, they can say they were trying to be a bit different.

"But for us sales of red roses have grown in percentage terms on Valentine's Day for the past five years. You can't really go wrong with them and I would expect them to be our best-sellers this year, despite the efforts of men to be a little different."

Serenata is expecting one of its best-selling bouquets, Secret Smile, to be a Valentine's Day hit at Pounds Sterling 39.99 with men wanting to give their partner something other than roses. The online florist is also expecting strong sales of its Cross My Heart bouquet (49.99), which includes a dozen red roses mixed with an array of other Valentine's Day flowers.

But the London-based online flower delivery firm believes both bouquets will have to go some to outsell its traditional classic of a dozen red roses (Pounds Sterling 29.99).

Serenata Flowers specialises in sending flowers across London and the rest of Britain six days a week. The online flower delivery company also has two sister sites specialising in online wine and chocolate delivery - SerenataWines and SerenataChocolates

The company is poised for one of its busiest periods of the year with both Valentine's Day and Mother's Day (March 14) imminent. Serenata delivers free and recently introduced an "avoid the school run" and Saturday morning delivery slots.
