Bombardier and Alstom Confirm That They Stand Ready to Build New Montreal Metro Cars Immediately

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - March 8, 2010) - Bombardier and Alstom wish to comment on the notices of interest submitted to the STM (Société de Transport de Montréal, Montreal's transit authority) by Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocariles, S.A. (« CAF ») and Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Ltd. for the replacement of Montréal's metro cars. In light of these notices, the Consortium made up of Bombardier and Alstom confirms it is ready to begin work on this contract immediately.

In December 2008, the Bombardier / Alstom Consortium was the sole bidder on the invitation to an international call for tenders for the replacement of the Montreal metro cars. At the STM's invitation, the consortium was involved in detailed negotiations with the STM to agree precisely on expectations and align their response to the customer's technical, financial and commercial requirements. The call for tenders issued by the STM was both thorough and precise regarding the specific requirements of the Montreal metro system.

Bombardier and Alstom are the most experienced suppliers in the rubber-tire metro technologies required by the STM. The Consortium partners have been involved in numerous metro projects around the world, including such accomplishments as the original STM MR-63 and MR-73 car and the metros of Paris, Mexico, Lausanne, Santiago and Marseilles. Together, the companies are best suited to understand and meet the requirements of the specifications of the STM. As part of the negotiations, Bombardier and Alstom's technical teams worked with the STM to finalize the requirements and specifications and are fully familiar with the rigour and detail of the STM's requirements.

Bombardier and Alstom together employ more than 20,000 employees in Canada, which offers them the foundation required to meet the stringent "Buy Canada" requirements of 60% Canadian content and to maximize economic benefits in local communities. They benefit from many years of local experience and a vast network of suppliers that have long been operating in Québec. The Bombardier plant in La Pocatière and its engineering center in St-Bruno, as well as Alstom's manufacturing site in Sorel-Tracy and its engineering center in Saint-Laurent have been operating locally for decades and rely on a highly qualified and dedicated workforce that consistently delivers high-quality work. Without an established base of local engineering as well as manufacturing expertise in carshell manufacturing, railcar assembly, electronic and electrical assembly, and the associated support infrastructure, it would have been impossible to meet the customer's requirements of meeting the local content and the challenging time schedule which is needed to deliver the first cars within 32 months.

Bombardier and Alstom are convinced that the STM will evaluate the notices of interest as soon as possible. The Consortium reaffirms its full cooperation with the STM and shares the common objective of ensuring that Montreal's metro users can rely on fast, reliable and safe service.

"The Consortium confirms it stands ready to begin the work immediately to ensure the successful supply of these much needed cars for the Montreal Metro" stated Raymond Bachant, President, Bombardier Transportation North America, on behalf of the Consortium. "The people of Montreal have waited long enough. We are ready to get down to work."
