Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) announced today that former Alberta Premier the Honourable Ralph Klein will join the national law firm as a senior business advisor.

"Ralph has shown throughout his career that he values many of the things we believe are essential to providing the best legal service in Canada," said BLG National Managing Partner Sean Weir. "The strong public support he enjoyed, leading four majority governments during 14 years, is proof that he listens to people and understands their needs, and of course he has always believed in clear, straightforward communication."

Mr. Klein will be based in BLG's Calgary office and will serve BLG clients across the country. "Mr. Klein can provide unparalleled insight for companies looking to make investments in Alberta and across Canada," said BLG National Co-chair Douglas Mitchell. "He is looking forward to going out and speaking to BLG clients and prospective clients across North America and around the world."

Mr. Klein resigned as premier on Dec. 14, 2006, exactly 14 years after he first took the office. He resigned his seat in the Alberta Legislative Assembly Jan. 15, 2007.

"I accepted BLG's offer because it's a well run, truly national firm, with a great presence in Alberta, and because it's a firm made up of people who I respect," said Mr. Klein. "They listen to people, they understand their clients' business needs, they're accessible and they don't talk like a bunch of lawyers."

Mr. Klein rose to public prominence in Calgary in 1980, when he won the first of three successive terms as mayor. He moved from municipal to provincial politics in 1989, becoming a member of the legislative assembly for the riding of Calgary Elbow, and serving as environment minister.

As premier, Mr. Klein created a fiscally responsible government that led to an unprecedented economic boom in Alberta. His successful political career has given him invaluable business experience and connections across Canada. And his economic development initiatives in Washington, D.C. have made him one of Canada's most highly regarded representatives in that country.

"Ralph is able to provide uniquely valuable insights to our clients as they look to do business in Alberta, in Canada, and in North America," said Mr. Weir.
