Bowie & Jensen's Matt Hjortsberg Named President of the Board for the Maryland Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

Hjortsberg's Wife Lara Is a Survivor of the Disease

TOWSON, MD--(Marketwire - June 17, 2010) -  Bowie & Jensen is pleased to announce that Matt Hjortsberg, a partner with the firm, has just been named as President of the Board for the Maryland Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Hjortsberg has served in various volunteer and leadership positions for the Society and most recently served as the State Corporate Chair for the Society's annual Light the Night walk.

The volunteer work is personal for the Hjortsberg family. Hjortsberg's wife Lara was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin Lymphoma six years ago just after the birth of their second daughter. Mrs. Hjortsberg is now a survivor of the disease.

"My family has personally been affected by Lymphoma and we were lucky to have the support of our family, friends, the community and doctors as we faced this disease," said Matt Hjortsberg. "As a firm Bowie & Jensen has been incredibly supportive of my family, the Society and my volunteer work."

"I'm looking forward to this year as Board President for Maryland because I know how much the work means to patients and families," Hjortsberg added. "The Chapter funds eighteen researches here in Maryland, and provides tremendous support to patients and their families."

Blood cancers such as leukemia, Hodgkin lymphoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, myeloma and myelodysplastic syndromes are cancers that originate in the bone marrow or lymphatic tissues.

Every ten minutes, someone dies from a blood cancer. This statistic represents nearly 146 people each day, or more than six people every hour. Leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under the age of 20. In general, the likelihood of dying from most types of leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma decreased from 1996 to 2005 (the most recent data available). The Society works tirelessly to support patients and their families and to raise money to find a cure.

Matt Hjortsberg is a member of the firm's litigation department. He has extensive experience in a wide variety of civil cases. Although his practice is concentrated in contract disputes and construction litigation, Mr. Hjortsberg has represented clients in business dissolution disputes, theft of trade secrets claims, regulatory investigations and estate & trust litigation matters.

Mr. Hjortsberg has tried cases in state and federal courts and before the American Arbitration Association. His notable cases include construction claims involving Ronald Reagan Airport, the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN), and Ripken Stadium as well as regulatory investigations into the credit counseling industry, the successful defense of a local publicly traded company in a suit alleging violations of the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act, a defense verdict in a multimillion dollar breach of contact claim and the management of several highly contested estate and trust matters.
