British Columbia Lottery Corporation: Lottery Retailers Brace for Expected Buying Frenzy for Canada's Largest Estimated Jackpot; $43 Million

RICHMOND, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Aug. 5, 2008) - Retailers are bracing themselves for what will likely be a rush of Lotto 6/49 ticket sales expected for this Wednesday's Lotto 6/49 jackpot, estimated at $43 million.

"We'll be doing everything we can to support our retailers with what will undoubtedly be a very hectic 24 hour sales period," says Michael Graydon, President and CEO of BCLC. "Aside from the current record jackpot, Wednesdays are the busiest sales day of the week." Just over 24% of all 6/49 sales go through on a Wednesday.

To date, the highest jackpot won by a B.C. 6/49 winner was $22 million. The largest-ever lottery jackpot won in Canada was a $54.3 million Lotto 6/49 prize from the October 26, 2005 draw, exceeding the estimated jackpot of $40 million at the time. That prize was won by a group of 17 oil and gas workers in Alberta.

Higher jackpots tend to increase participation by groups interested in sharing the large prize pool.

"We caution everyone who might be interested in joining a group to be clear in what each member is signing up for," added Graydon. "By using a group purchase agreement they can avoid potential for disagreements between winners." Group Purchase Forms are available at free of charge

During peak lottery sales, BCLC handles as many as 4,315 transactions per minute.

Tickets for this Wednesday's jackpot can be purchased until 6:00 p.m. (PDT) on the day of the draw. Because almost half of the game's sales traditionally occur on draw day, players are encouraged to buy their tickets early. Winning numbers and prize information - including whether the jackpot was won - will be available on or at your local lottery retailer.

If no one wins and Wednesday's Jackpot is carried over, the Saturday August 9th jackpot will set another all-time record.

Lotto 6/49 is the nationwide lottery game drawn on Wednesdays and Saturdays after 6 p.m. (PDT). Players can purchase tickets at any lottery retailer or at BCLC's web site.
