British Columbians Sweep Live Free for a Year ™ Sweepstakes

Ever fantasized about what you would do if your bills simply stopped coming for a whole year? Three lucky British Columbia residents are about to find out what life is like without the worry of everyday expenses, thanks to winning the opportunity to LIVE FREE FOR A YEAR!™ from the AIR MILES Reward Program.

Heather Stark from Abbotsford, BC, Bruce Thomas, a new resident of Williams Lake, BC, and Elizabeth Smith from Langley, BC, were chosen from more than 6 million AIR MILES Collectors across Canada. All three will have their everyday expenses including gas, groceries, mortgage, long distance, travel, internet access, sporting goods, home entertainment, CDs and DVDs, movie passes, and more paid for by participating AIR MILES Sponsors for an entire year.

"I'm relieved that I won't have to pay for gas or groceries all year," says Heather Stark. "I'm planning on taking a vacation and making an extra payment on my mortgage."

Bruce Thomas is in the midst of moving from Alberta to British Columbia. "The timing couldn't be better," he says. "Some of the money I would otherwise spend on daily expenses during the year will go towards the new mortgage, and a family vacation is being planned. Plus, I'm looking forward to more weekends away with the kids."

Meanwhile Elizabeth Smith, who took early retirement in March, is planning to pay off debt.

The three winners' plans are consistent with the findings of an Ipsos-Reid survey released in conjunction with the launch of LIVE FREE FOR A YEAR!™ in which 87% of BC residents indicated they would spend more time with family and friends if they had no bills to pay for one year, compared to the national average of 83%. Among the other activities BC residents would choose to pursue if relieved of everyday expenses: pay off debt (87% compared to 79% nationally) and travel (80% compared to 77% nationally). Residents of British Columbia were also more likely than the national average to study or go back to school (42% compared to 35% nationally) and the most likely among Canadians to become their own boss "by investing in or starting a new business" (36% compared to 32% nationally.)

"The survey revealed that Canadians, and British Columbians in particular, value the simple pleasures in life and would take advantage of any opportunity to focus on the things that really matter if they could be free of day-to-day bills and expenses," said Caroline Papadatos, Vice President of Marketing for the AIR MILES Reward Program.
"We hope that our grand prize winners take the opportunity to escape with AIR MILES from the day to day worries of bills and spend time with the folks who matter most, their families."

The LIVE FREE FOR A YEAR™ contest was open to all AIR MILES Collectors who used their AIR MILES card and earned AIR MILES reward miles between October 18th and November 28th, 2004 at participating Sponsor locations. Three Grand Prize winners were chosen to receive a year's worth of everyday expenses (value approximately $37,000 based on average national household expenditures¹) such as mortgage, credit on credit cards, gas, groceries, long distance and internet access, flight, sporting goods and entertainment expenses from participating AIR MILES Sponsors and Reward suppliers. Every AIR MILES reward mile collected at a participating Sponsor was an entry into the contest and a chance to win.
