Broward Health Chris Evert Children's Hospital Announces Powerful Kid Contest

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL--(Marketwire - April 12, 2010) -  In a world of junk food and video games, is your child physically fit, eating right, doing their homework, and an upstanding citizen? If that's the case, then they might be South Florida's most Powerful Kid.

Chris Evert Children's Hospital (CECH) is introducing the Powerful Kid Contest. The grand prize winner will receive an extreme digital makeover, including: Macbook, iPad, iPod touch, iPod nano, Wii Fit™ Plus and a Flip Video camera.

Nominate a kid you know between the ages 5 and 18 by filling out an entry form online at PowerfulKidCare.org. The deadline for submissions is May 5, 2010 at midnight. All applicants must be residents of Miami-Dade, Broward or Palm Beach County. Entries must include:

  • A short video, up to one minute in length, or photograph that conveys what the child does to stay healthy, physically or mentally.
  • A 150 word essay, authored by an adult (parent, teacher or family member), explaining why this child is a Powerful Kid:

What is a Powerful Kid?
A Powerful Kid is any kid who does something special to stay healthy, physically or mentally. Maybe she pushes a lawnmower around an elderly neighbor's yard. Maybe he hides under his covers with a flashlight, studying when he's supposed to be sleeping. Every kid has a powerful story and we'd like to hear them all. Something engaging. Something heartwarming. Something inspirational. Something that makes you proud of them, that you'd like to share with the community.

  • A separate photo of the child, such as a school photo.

A panel of judges featuring tennis great Chris Evert; Dr. Patricia Rowe-King, CECH's Pediatrics Chair; 97.3 FM The Coast's Julie Guy; Kyara Lomer Camarena, Editor-in-Chief of South Florida Parenting magazine; and Joe Rogers, Sr. Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, Broward Health will select a finalist from each grade level -- elementary, middle and high school. The public will then be invited to vote online for the ultimate grand prize winner from May 17-30.
