Bushes Primary School Lollipop Man Wins the UK Kwik Fit Insurance Lollipop Person of the Year Award 2009

GLASGOW, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Dec. 8, 2009) - Paisley lollipop man John Foley has been named the UK's favourite lollipop man after being crowned the Kwik Fit Insurance Lollipop Person of the Year 2009.

Despite only having been a lollipop person since January of this year, John has made a huge impression on the children, teachers and parents of Bushes Primary School. As well as helping the kids to cross the road each day, John regularly goes beyond the call of duty, playing goalkeeper in beat-the-goalie competitions at fun days to help raise school funds, talking to children about road safety and generally being involved in all school activities.

Further still, he is the local handy man and has been known to change car tyres when staff have punctures - and he even helps the dinner ladies set up the dining room tables in time for lunch.

John, 56, a former firefighter, was forced to take early retirement from Strathclyde Fire Brigade after 18 years service when he was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome ME. He said: "It was big blow at the time as I was a very active person. I used to cycle to work every day and would often cycle to Loch Lomond from Glasgow at the weekend.

"It was difficult to stay positive at that time in my life, but I've been in good health in recent years and working with the staff and children of Bushes Primary School has given me a new lease of life."

Head Teacher Moira Monaghan commented that as soon as her pupils heard about the Kwik Fit Insurance competition they were desperate to support John all the way.

She said: "We were over the moon when we heard John had been picked as the winner for Scotland, but when we took the call saying he had won for the whole of the UK we just couldn't believe it.

"He's such an important part of our school and we really don't think the title of Kwik Fit Insurance Lollipop Person of the Year could go to a better person. The kids love him dearly and so do we."

The search to find the UK's favourite Lollipop person was officially launched by TV personality Lorraine Kelly in September at the iconic zebra crossing on Abbey Road with the aim of highlighting the important role lollipop people play every day to ensure the safety of kids on our roads in communities across Britain.

The pupils and parents of Bushes Primary posted handwritten nomination forms for John, highlighting his warm personality, boundless energy and commitment to the school community as the reason he's so special.

Not only that, the school also created a 'This Is Your Life'-style book explaining exactly why John is number one and the schoolchildren composed a rap to the tune of Robbie Williams hit, 'Rock DJ' and a song to The Proclaimers '500 Miles' for John.

The school held a special assembly in John's honour which was attended by Keith Brown MSP, Minister for Schools and Skills, and George Bowie, presenter of Radio Clyde's breakfast show.

Mr Brown, said: "The safety of children coming to and from school is of paramount importance and it's essential that we recognise the excellent work undertaken in each of our communities by our lollipop patrols. John has obviously made a big impression here at Bushes Primary School and thoroughly deserves this accolade."

Presenting the award at a special school, Brendan Devine, managing director of Kwik Fit Financial Services, said: "We received almost 20,000 entries to the competition from schools across the length and breadth of the UK, but John's entry stood head and shoulders above the rest - the effort the school children put into their nomination of John was outstanding and it was immediately clear just how much John is loved and valued by the whole of Bushes Primary.

"This competition was all about finding the lollipop people who make a real difference in their communities and who keep children safe on the roads, and John is a worthy winner for the UK."

As well as a unique trophy John will receive a Pounds Sterling 1500 holiday voucher and the school will be presented with a cheque for Pounds Sterling 3000 which they plan to use to create a community garden with John's help.

Hamleys, the world's most famous toy store, which recently opened in Glasgow's St Enoch Centre, donated 450 Hamleys lollipops to the children of Bushes Primary School.

In total, more than 19,000 entries were received from schools across the UK.
