Business Community Takes to the Street for Ottawa's Neediest

Gowlings hosts 4-on-4 street hockey challenge to benefit The Ottawa Food Bank

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 25, 2008) - On Wednesday, Nov. 26, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Ottawa business community will gather at Scotiabank Place (Parking Lot 4) to play in a 4-on-4 street hockey challenge. Organized by Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP (Gowlings), the corporate challenge will raise food and money to benefit The Ottawa Food Bank. The event is being promoted in association with the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship, of which Gowlings is a proud sponsor.

"We're always looking for ways to support important community-based charities and initiatives. Helping out The Ottawa Food Bank at this time of the year just made sense," says Wayne Kerrick, the managing partner of Gowlings' Ottawa office.

Response to the event has been overwhelming, with the street hockey challenge attracting 25 teams and more than 170 participants, including companies such as MBNA, Navigant Consulting, Inc., Merkley Supply Ltd., Deloitte, Greco Lean & Fit, Collins Barrow, Iogen Corporation, Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

In addition to collecting at least two non-perishable food items from each participant, all proceeds raised from sponsorship opportunities and a silent auction will go to The Ottawa Food Bank. To date, $2,600 in sponsorship donations have been raised. As an added incentive to donate, Gowlings will be giving away numerous tickets to the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship games.

"The Ottawa Food Bank is extremely grateful for Gowlings' support, especially during this time of economic uncertainty," says Peter Tilley, executive director of The Ottawa Food Bank. "The average person is certainly feeling the pinch and anxiety during this challenging financial climate, but those people hovering around the poverty line are feeling even worse - they're having to decide between paying the heating bill or putting food on their family's table."

The Ottawa Food Bank helps 43,000 people a month with emergency food assistance. Twelve tons of food leaves its Michael Street warehouse every day, destined for the 127 social service agencies it supports.
