CA Institute Confers FCA Designations on 10 Ottawa-Area Chartered Accountants

Local CAs among 75 Ontario-wide to receive profession's top honour

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 24, 2009) - The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario has announced the election of 75 Ontario Chartered Accountants as Fellows of the Institute, earning the designation FCA. That includes 10 Chartered Accountants in the Ottawa region. Fellowship elections are held every three years.

The highest designation the Institute confers, Fellowship is awarded for outstanding career achievements as well as outstanding service to the community and the profession. The names of the new FCAs in the Ottawa region are listed below:

A Partner with BDO Dunwoody LLP based in Embrun, outside of Ottawa, Pierre Bourgon served on the firm's advisory boards for Eastern Canada and Ontario Lakehead regions. His was the Office Managing Partner of the Ottawa Group, encompassing four offices and two satellite offices, for 18 years. He was also a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario's Discipline Committee from 1999 to 2008. Pierre has served his community in many ways, including: as both member and President of the St. Isidore Chamber of Commerce; member; President and Secretary of the St. Isidore Optimist Club; Treasurer of both the Jacques Martin Annual Golf Tournament and the Cumberland Minor Hockey Association; and a volunteer at tax clinics for seniors for the last 15 years.

Assistant Deputy Minister, Resolution and Individual Affairs at Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC), Caroline Davis deals with many issues including overseeing the implementation of the $1.9 billion Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement, while also conducting a large departmental re-organization. Since becoming a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario in 1980, her 30-year career with the Government of Canada has seen Caroline taking many increasingly senior roles with a wide variety of departments, including Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Treasury Board Secretariat, the Department of Supply and Services, and Canada Ports Corporation. She was INAC's Senior Financial Officer for five years prior to her current appointment.

Carol Devenny became a CA in 1985 and a Partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Ottawa in 1995. Today, she is in charge of the Ottawa office's Audit Practice. She primarily focuses on delivering audit services to the public sector, including assignments with the Office of the Auditor General of Canada, the Treasury Board of Canada, government departments and Crown Corporations. Carol is a member of the PSAB CICA Task Force on Entity Level Financial Statements. She is currently the Treasurer, Audit Committee Chair and member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario Foundation and a Treasurer and President of the Ashbury College Guild, which supports an independent school.

Karen Kinsley is President and CEO of Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation – a federal Crown Corporation and Canada's national housing agency. In 2008, CMHC was ranked first among Federal Crown Corporations in terms of revenue by the Globe and Mail's Report on Business Magazine. For the same year, the Financial Post's Business FP500 ranked CMHC as 19th of the top 500 companies, based on profit, and the seventh largest financial institution in the country based on revenue. CMHC has been ranked one of the top 25 employers in the National Capital Region and one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers. In 2006, she was inducted into the Canadian Mortgage Hall of Fame by the Canadian Association of Accredited Mortgage Professionals. A CA since 1979, in 2008, Karen was named as one of Canada's 100 Most Powerful Women by the Women's Executive Network.

President of the Ottawa Senators, Cyril Leeder was one of a small group of people who landed the NHL franchise for Ottawa in 1990. Using the CA expertise he'd honed since receiving the designation in 1984, he developed the original business plan for the proposed franchise and arena operations, was instrumental in negotiating an ownership transfer in 2003 and continues to run the day-to-day workings of the franchise today. In 2008, Cyril was honoured as the Business Person of the Year at the Ottawa Business Achievement Awards. He is active in a number of local charitable initiatives including his role as a member of the Board of Directors of the Sens Foundation, the second largest contributor to Ottawa-based charities, which among other good works, founded Roger's House, a $4-million paediatric palliative care facility at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario.

As Comptroller General of Canada, Rod Monette is the Deputy Minister responsible for financial management and internal audit within the government of Canada. Previously he was Associate Deputy Minister of National Defence, where his responsibilities included defence policy and military procurement. He was an Assistant Deputy Minister in several departments, including Chief Financial Officer at National Defence, Public Works and Government Services, and Environment Canada. A CA since 1981, he began his career at Clarkson Gordon. The Office of the Comptroller General has recently become part of the CA Training Office (CATO) program, thereby allowing CA students interested in careers in the federal government to get training through assignments in various government departments. Last year he published his first book, "Road Worthy", about his motorcycle travels through North America.

A CA since 1985, Debi Rosati has been successful in public practice, the technology and venture capital sector and as a Corporate Director. As President of RosatiNet Inc., she has helped raise venture capital for more than 20 companies and develop their financing strategies. Debi graduated from the Institute of Corporate Directors, Directors Education Program and is an Institute of Corporate, Institute-certified Director, ICD.D. She currently sits on the board and audit committee of Sears Canada Inc. Debi is an active member of her community through her business leadership roles as Co-Chair of the ICD Ottawa Chapter Executive Committee and on the board of Women in the Lead Inc., and as a member of Brock University President's National Advisory Council and Faculty of Business Advisory Council. Debi received her Honours of Bachelor of Business Administration from Brock University.

Don Scott received his CA designation in 1981 and has been working in the income tax area since 1982. He started working at Welch LLP in 1988, and has been a Partner since 1989. Don is currently the Director of Tax Services with the firm, overseeing a group that has grown from two people to 11. He has been involved in numerous courses for both the ICAO and CICA, including the CICA In-Depth Tax Course, the CICA Income Tax Practitioners course, the ICAO summer school program, and author and presenter of the ICAO Income Tax Update course. He has also taught the University of Ottawa's Introductory Tax Course since 2006. In recognition of his contribution to the CA profession, in 2008 Don received the CICA Award for Excellence in Income Tax Practice and Education.

As the Federal Member of Parliament representing Mississauga South for the Liberal Party, Paul Szabo is currently the only elected Chartered Accountant in Ottawa and has worked closely with the CICA on a variety of income tax and related legislative and budgetary issues. A CA since 1973, Paul started his career at Price Waterhouse before moving on to a number of prominent roles in industry. Elected to Parliament in 1993 and re-elected five times since, he has developed over 50 private member bills, with emphasis on taxation, health, families, children, poverty and seniors. In May 2009, he was named the "Hardest Working MP" by MPs for the third consecutive year. Prior to being elected, Paul was very active in the community, and was honoured for his work as one of Central Canada's Five Outstanding Young Canadians.

An Ontario CA since 1973, early in his career Tony Tattersfield worked in the Central American nation of Belize, where he helped found what became the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Belize. Back in Ottawa, he worked with several firms, becoming a founding Partner with Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton LLP, where he is currently an Assurance Partner. For the past 30 years, Tony has been a firm representative with a number of local organizations, including the Ottawa Board of Trade, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, and the former Ottawa-Carleton Economic Development Corporation. His community service work includes supporting the Priory of Canada (St. John's Ambulance), the Consumers' Association of Canada, the Canadian Ski Association, Ashbury College, Carleton University, the National Arts Centre and a number of national Foundations.

Ontario's Chartered Accountants work in public practice, industry, academe, government and the not-for-profit sector. About three per cent of CAs have earned the FCA designation.
