CARE Canada Introduces a Special Gift for Mother's Day Instead of Roses, Help Send an Afghan Woman to School

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 2, 2008) - CARE challenges you to think outside of the box of chocolates and step away from the roses this Mother's Day to give a gift that can make a difference. CARE is asking Canadians to give your mother a gift donation of $46 this year - about equivalent to the price of a dozen roses - and she can help send an Afghan woman to school.

"We want to give mothers across Canada a chance to help mothers make a better life for their children," said Kevin McCort, president and CEO of CARE Canada. "By providing skills training to women in Afghanistan, you will be helping them provide for their families and to become independent."

There are approximately 50,000 widows in Kabul, Afghanistan, most of whom lost their husbands in decades of fighting. It is estimated that 50 per cent of these widows are vulnerable and living in poverty.

Since 2000, CARE has worked to train approximately 12,000 vulnerable women in Afghanistan with new skills to enter the work force. The vast majority of women who participate use their newly acquired skills to earn income long after they receive their diploma. Training includes everything from sewing to livestock training.

With gifts like yours, you will help increase the self-sufficiency of vulnerable mothers and their families in Kabul. Your gift will assist CARE in providing training for one woman, which is one vital step closer to independence.

With your gift donation to the "Mother's day gift that makes a difference," CARE will email you a certificate that you can print and give to your mother this Mother's Day to show her the difference she has made.

When shopping for Mother's Day this year, remember that rose petals will eventually fall, but with your help, these women have the power to keep standing.
