CCH Canada Releases Window on GST/HST for Quick Research on the CRA's "HQ Letters"

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 18, 2010) - CCH, Canada's leading provider of tax, accounting and audit information, software and services, today announced the launch of Window on GST/HST. Considered excellent value, it's a collection of summaries, complete with analysis, of the Canada Revenue Agency's (CRA) most relevant GST/HST Headquarter Rulings and Interpretation Letters ("HQ Letters"). The main purpose of Window on GST/HST? Clarity.

The original HQ Letters are included with this product. They come directly from the CRA's GST/HST Rulings Directorate and are "essential for in-depth GST/HST research," says Philippe Pichette, Director, Product Management at CCH. However, HQ Letters are often up to five pages long and Pichette euphemistically adds that "their readability is diminished due to the sanitizing necessary to maintain taxpayer confidentiality." Consequently, the HQ Letters can be challenging to decipher and distill, even for experienced practitioners such as accountants and tax lawyers.

Window on GST/HST neatly analyzes and summarizes the HQ letters within a single page, often just half a page. The summaries can significantly reduce research time, saving professionals (and their own clients) precious hours and therefore money. Where appropriate, the analysis may encompass planning opportunities or warnings about pitfalls.

However, the HQ Letters' length is only part of the issue. "The sheer volume of HQ Letters can also be overwhelming," Pichette says. Given the many ongoing developments in tax legislation, even the most efficient professionals can find it challenging to stay up to date. The analyses and summaries, which Window on GST/HST entails, include the most important HQ letters since 2004. (Years preceding 2004 are forthcoming, CCH adds.)

A shorthand notebook for HQ Letters, Window on GST/HST provides immediate insight into the CRA's approach to GST/HST legislation. "It's the only real-time catalogued expert summary and analysis of CRA's HQ Letters," adds Pichette. "The author Sheila Wisner is an authority. She's been writing about the GST since it was introduced in 1991."

Summaries and analyses include cross-references to related and relevant material, making it such an excellent resource for quick research. "Users don't have to search
for individual HQ Letters and other sources, and then put them all together," says Pichette. These cross-references include such vital resources as the Excise Tax Act, CCH's GST Reporter Commentary and assorted CRA publications.

Window on GST/HST will become more necessary given the pending harmonization of provincial taxes and GST in British Columbia and Ontario, coming on July 1st. Already an indispensable step in a thorough search, Window on GST/HST is available immediately online with free technical support, and on DVD with free training.
